Mmm, That’s Tasty! by Neville Gardner
School Journal June 2012

WALT: Begin to use a range of scientific symbols, conventions, and vocabulary.
SC:      Complete a small science report on the taste + smell experiement

  1. There are 5 main flavour receptors. Sweet, Salty, Bitter, Sour and Umami.
List some foods fit each of the flavour receptors.

Bitter
  • Coffee
  • Cocoa powder
Salty
  • Sea salt
Sour
  • Lemons
  • Yogurt
Sweet
  • Oranges
  • Syrup
  • Cookie
  • Muffin
  • Watermelon
  • Apple
  • Pineapple
  • Cherry
  • Pancake etc
Umami (savoury)
  • Pies
  • Mini Spinach Breakfast Quiche
  • Maple Bacon Cinnamon Rolls

  1. Record the words you didn’t know before. Add a picture or sentence to describe what they mean.

WORD
MEANING
Papillae (p.26)
Its has about 10,000 taste buds that is on top of your tongue, your papillae.
Receptor (p.26 )
Receptor is a taste bud that recognizes food types like sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami(savoury).

texture (p.25)

The feel and appearance of food or other substances.
recognise (p.28)
It is to see something and immediately identify that object / Person12

  1. On Page 29, there is the great jelly bean challenge. Mrs Parker will provide you with some Jelly Beans (or other items) to complete this task.
Use the template for a science report below to write what you did, and what you found.

Question: Do our taste buds require smell?

Hypothesis: I think that we won't be able to taste anything and you will have to rely on the textures that your tongue picks up (Eg Flakes, crumble and it continues)

Materials:
  • Food
  • Blind fold
  • Hands
  • Partner(s) (optional)
  • Nose
  • Piece of paper and a pen/pencil

Procedure:

  1. First you prepare the food
  2. Then you put on the blind fold
  3. Then with one hand pinch your nose and make sure you can’t smell anything
  4. With the other hand put the Jelly bean or other types of food in your mouth
  5. Chew it and do not swallow
  6. Tell your partner what you taste, for example texture and taste
  7. Then when he/she has written it down on the piece of paper
  8. After they did that take off the blindfold and unblock your nose
  9. Then tell them the difference in the tastes

Observations:
  1. The first taste I got when I put the Jelly bean in my mouth was the sugar
  2. I also looked for the texture and what I picked up was a flakey kind of texture
  3. When I opened my eyes and unblocked my nose I immediately knew what the flavour was
  4. The flavour I guessed was Grape and the bean flavour was Grape.
Conclusion:
Yes, My hypothesis was right because I looked for the texture and how much sugar I could taste in that bean.

Activity
Waves Win
When land is reclaimed from the sea, Huge concrete blocks are used to protect it from the waves.

Over time, the sea erodes these blocks so that only a part of them remains.

For example, these diagrams show 5 years’ erosion on a concrete block. (Of course, most blocks would not erode quite as evenly as the ones in the diagrams)

  1. A, what do the before and after decimal numbers mean?
Erosion from 5 years
           B, Write 0.750 as a fraction
3/4

  1. Here are some other eroded blocks. Find the decimal number for each eroded block. Write your answers with three decimal places. You may need to build each block with place value blocks first.

A. 0.500     B. 0.260   C. 0.475  D.0.665    E.1.475
